It’s just a weird world out there

Sometimes (more than sometimes, for me), you wonder what exactly are you doing in life. Going to your job, giving your best there, perhaps thinking about work/ working way beyond your office hours. But what all for? A paycheck? Yes. But what else? Are you really making anyone’s life better? Are you doing anything to make the world a better place? Yes, You could be donating, perhaps doing small bits, but what else? The work that you do daily is not saving the world. It is not helping diminish the sufferings in the world. So what exactly are you doing? What other than just living a selfish existence where you make money, and spend it on yourself, or perhaps on a few loved ones, with some donations peppered in.

What is this world, that rewards only money, power, beauty and fame. With the latter mostly coming from amassing wealth. Are we even once looking at things through the lens of humanity? Yes, those billionaires are glamourous. But how are they as humans? Have they uplifted others with all their fame and wealth? Or have have they gotten wealthy by exploiting the vulnerable?

Whom are we rewarding? Are we only cheering for the ones who are outspoken, and boast about things that they hardly made any contribution to? Or are we appreciating the sincere hard workers, who put in all the work? They sound unsure, because there are still things to improve, and they don’t like to hog the spotlight. They don’t exaggerate things, they don’t add any pizzazz, don’t use any unnecessary jargon, they say things as they are.

Are we valuing honesty and conscientiousness, or are we only concerned about “ getting things done”, irrespective of the ways entailed in that? The human, environmental consequences of man’s greed and thirst for power, can be seen everywhere. The more you learn, the worse everything seems.

Something has to be really messed up, if honest people are told to “smarten up”, or learn to amend their ways to fit in the world. Hope that we value kindness and love over appearances and money. Hope that we all are encouraged to be warm and show care. Hope the systems factor in the impact on surroundings: fellow humans, communities or the environment, while defining success and role models.
